Wonder of the Week: Where are we?

The puzzling canyon ... this isn't just another scenic drive.
The rocks are volcanic ...
... and the drainage pattern is odd, though not all that rare in the American West.

There was no traffic except near the west end of the canyon, where I met another traveler. He was headed east to Santa Fe, New Mexico, taking a shortcut through the high country.

More information forthcoming.  If you happen to be wondering about the previous mystery location ... I only know that it was in Death Valley National Monument (California).  Other than that, my source is keeping mum.
